Tyre has an attractive harbor near a lively souk and is the administrative center for a number of villages and towns.  Tyre lies on the coast with the historic island part of the city protruding into the sea to the west.  On the eastern side of Tyre is the residential suburb of Al-Bass and the excavated Roman site.
