(1050m, 52km from Beirut)
Zahle, the Capital of the Beqaa, is referred to
as "Arousat al Beqaa" or the "Bride of the Beqaa". It is a medium-size
town which is built along the banks of the Bardawni River. Zahle has
retained some of its old character in its Ottoman-era stone houses with
red-tile roofs, while its modern buildings reflect the prosperity the town
enjoys. It is most famous for its open-air restaurants along the
river's edges, usually full of people from Beirut and tourists from
neighboring Arab countries. The town has taken on city features
offering the visitor all the basic services (banks, hospitals, post office,
etc.) near the center.
The Ksara wine cellars, the 7th greatest cellar in the world (11 km
underground) is worth visiting.
